[11] "Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessing five factors, using and resorting to a lodging (senāsana) possessing five factors, might in no long time — through the destruction of the taints (āsava) — realize for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and having entered upon it, dwell therein.
"And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu possess five factors? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has faith (saddhā); he places faith in the awakening of the Tathāgata thus: 'That Blessed One is indeed an arahant, fully self-enlightened, perfect in knowledge and conduct, sublime (sugata), knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' He is one of little affliction and little illness, possessing an even digestion, neither too cool nor too hot, but medium, capable of enduring striving. He is not fraudulent or deceitful, one who reveals himself as he really is to the Teacher or to his wise companions in the holy life. He dwells with energy aroused for the abandoning of unwholesome states and the attainment of wholesome states; he is strong, firm in exertion, not shirking the responsibility with regard to wholesome states. He is wise, possessing the wisdom that discerns arising and passing away, which is noble and penetrative, leading to the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha). Thus indeed, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possesses five factors.
"And how, bhikkhus, does a lodging possess five factors? Here, bhikkhus, a lodging is neither too far nor too near, and is possessed of a path for going and coming; by day it is uncrowded, and by night it is quiet and free from noise, with little contact with gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, burning sun, and creeping things. For one dwelling in that lodging, robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites as supports for the sick arise with little difficulty. In that lodging there dwell elder bhikkhus who are learned, versed in the scriptures, bearers of the Dhamma, bearers of the Vinaya, bearers of the mātikās. From time to time he approaches them and inquires and questions them: 'How is this, venerable sir? What is the meaning of this?' Those venerable ones disclose to him what has not been disclosed, make plain what has not been made plain, and dispel his doubt concerning the many things that are grounds for doubt. Thus indeed, bhikkhus, a lodging possesses five factors.
"Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessing five factors, using and resorting to a lodging possessing five factors, might in no long time — through the destruction of the taints … — having realized it, enter upon and dwell therein."
