[198] Bhikkhus, one possessing ten qualities is deposited in hell (niraya) as surely as if carried and put there. What ten? He is one who destroys life; one who takes what is not given; one who engages in sexual misconduct; one who speaks falsely; one of malicious speech; one of harsh speech; one who indulges in frivolous talk; one who is covetous; one of a mind of ill will; one of wrong view. Bhikkhus, one possessing these ten qualities is deposited in hell as surely as if carried and put there.
Bhikkhus, one possessing ten qualities is deposited in heaven (sagga) as surely as if carried and put there. What ten? He is one who abstains from the destruction of life; who abstains from taking what is not given; who abstains from sexual misconduct; who abstains from false speech; who abstains from malicious speech; who abstains from harsh speech; who abstains from frivolous talk; who is non-covetous; whose mind is without ill will; who is of right view. Bhikkhus, one possessing these qualities is deposited in heaven as surely as if carried and put there.
