[184] 6. This indeed was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, abandon one thing; I am your guarantor (pāṭibhoga) for non-returning (anāgāmitā). What one thing? Conceit (māna), bhikkhus: abandon this one thing; I am your guarantor for non-returning."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In this connection it is said:
"That conceit by which beings, intoxicated,¹ go to a bad destination (duggati) —
having fully understood that conceit, those with insight (vipassino) abandon it;
having abandoned it, they never at any time come again to this world."
¹ Other editions (Po., Ma., Yu.) read *makkhāse*.
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
