[186] This indeed was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, one who does not directly know and fully understand conceit (māna), who does not make the mind (citta) dispassionate toward it and does not abandon it, is incapable of the destruction of suffering (dukkha). But, bhikkhus, one who directly knows and fully understands conceit, who makes the mind dispassionate toward it and abandons it, is capable of the destruction of suffering."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. Therein this is said:
"This generation is possessed of conceit, bound by the tie of conceit, delighting in existence;
not fully understanding conceit, they come again to renewed existence.
But those who, having abandoned conceit, are liberated in the destruction of conceit,
they, vanquishers of the tie of conceit, have passed beyond every tie."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
