[187] 9. This indeed was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant — so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, not directly knowing and not fully understanding greed (lobha), not making the mind (citta) dispassionate toward it, not abandoning it, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering (dukkha). But, bhikkhus, directly knowing and fully understanding greed, making the mind dispassionate toward it, abandoning it, one is capable of the destruction of suffering."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In this connection it is said:
"The greed by which greedy beings
go to a bad destination (duggati) —
rightly understanding that greed,
those of insight abandon it;
having abandoned it, they come no more
to this world at any time."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
