[188] 10. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant — so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, not directly knowing and not fully understanding hatred (dosa), not detaching the mind (citta) from it, not abandoning it, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering (dukkha). But, bhikkhus, directly knowing and fully understanding hatred, detaching the mind from it, abandoning it, one is capable of the destruction of suffering."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In this connection, it is said:
"That hatred by which beings corrupted by hate
go to a bad destination (duggati) —
rightly understanding that hatred,
those with insight abandon it;
having abandoned it, they never
come back to this world again."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One — so I have heard. The tenth [sutta].
The Pāṭibhogavagga [Chapter on the Guarantor], the first.
Its summary (uddāna):
Rāga and dosa,¹ then moha;
kodha and makkha; māna; sabba;
after māna, rāga and dosa once more — two:
[thus] set forth, they have called this the first chapter.
¹ Variant reading (Po.): "rāgo doso."
