[208] 3. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant — so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, there are these two things that cause torment (tapanīya). What two? Here, bhikkhus, someone has not done what is good, has not done what is wholesome, has not made a shelter from fear; he has done what is evil, done what is cruel, done what is wicked. He is tormented, thinking, 'I have not done what is good,' and he is tormented, thinking, 'I have done what is evil.' These, bhikkhus, are the two things that cause torment."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In this connection it is said:
"Having done bodily misconduct (kāyaduccarita),
or acts of verbal misconduct,
having done mental misconduct,
and whatever else is tainted with fault;
not having done wholesome deeds,
having done much that is unwholesome,
with the breakup of the body, that one of poor wisdom
is reborn in hell (niraya)."
This matter too was spoken by the Blessed One — so I have heard. The Third.
