[233] 6. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, there are these three searches (esanā). What three? The search for sensual pleasures (kāmesanā), the search for existence (bhavesanā), and the search for a holy life (brahmacariyesanā). These, bhikkhus, are the three searches."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In this connection it is said:
"The search for sensual pleasures, the search for existence,
together with the search for a holy life,
the grasping 'This is truth' —
these are standpoints for views, accumulations.
For one detached from all lust,
liberated through the destruction of craving (taṇhā),
the searches have been relinquished
and the standpoints for views uprooted.
With the destruction of the searches, a bhikkhu
is without longing and free from doubt."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
