[234] 7. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, there are these three taints (āsava). What three? The taint of sensuality (kāmāsava), the taint of existence (bhavāsava), and the taint of ignorance (avijjāsava). These, bhikkhus, are the three taints."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In this connection it is said:
"Concentrated, clearly comprehending, mindful, the disciple of the Buddha
understands the taints and the arising of the taints,
where these cease, and the path leading to their destruction;
with the destruction of the taints, a bhikkhu, free from hunger, is fully quenched."
This matter too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
