[235] 8. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, there are these three taints (āsava). What three? The taint of sensuality (kāmāsava), the taint of existence (bhavāsava), and the taint of ignorance (avijjāsava). These, bhikkhus, are the three taints."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In this connection, this is said:
"One in whom the taint of sensuality is destroyed,
and ignorance (avijjā) has been dispelled,
in whom the taint of existence is utterly destroyed —
fully released, free from acquisitions (nirūpadhi),
he bears his final body,
having conquered Māra together with his mount."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
