[236] 9. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, there are these three cravings (taṇhā). What three? Craving for sensual pleasures (kāmataṇhā), craving for existence (bhavataṇhā), and craving for non-existence (vibhavataṇhā). These, bhikkhus, are the three cravings."
The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In this connection it is said:
"Fettered by the yoke of craving, their minds (citta) impassioned for this or that state of existence,
those people, yoked to the yoke of Māra, have no security from bondage —
beings go on to saṃsāra, bound for birth and death.
But those who, having abandoned craving, are rid of craving for this or that state of existence,
they indeed [1] have gone beyond in the world — they who have attained the destruction of the taints (āsava)."
[1] Yu (European edition) reads: "te ca pāraṅgatā."
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
