[246] 9. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, whoever has not abandoned lust (rāga), not abandoned hatred (dosa), not abandoned delusion (moha) — he, bhikkhus, is called one bound by Māra, upon whom Māra's snare has been fastened, and the Evil One (pāpimant) can do with him as he wishes. Bhikkhus, whoever has abandoned lust, abandoned hatred, abandoned delusion — he, bhikkhus, is called one not bound by Māra, from whom Māra's snare has been cast off, and the Evil One cannot do with him as he wishes."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In that connection this is said:
"One in whom lust and hatred
and ignorance (avijjā) have been expunged —
him, one among those developed in self,
become holy (brahmabhūta), a Tathāgata,
a Buddha who has passed beyond enmity and fear —
they call an abandoner of all."
This matter too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
