[247] This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, any bhikkhu or bhikkhunī whatsoever in whom lust (rāga) is unabandoned, hatred (dosa) unabandoned, delusion (moha) unabandoned — such a one, bhikkhus, is said not to have crossed the ocean with its waves, with its billows, with its whirlpools, with its seizing monsters (gaha), with its demons (rakkhasa). Bhikkhus, any bhikkhu or bhikkhunī whatsoever in whom lust is abandoned, hatred abandoned, delusion abandoned — such a one, bhikkhus, is said to have crossed the ocean with its waves, with its billows, with its whirlpools, with its seizing monsters, with its demons; crossed over, gone beyond, he stands on dry land, a brahmin (brāhmaṇa)."
The Blessed One spoke this matter. In that connection, this is said:
"One in whom lust and hatred
and ignorance (avijjā) have faded away
has crossed beyond this ocean with its seizing monsters,
its demons, its perilous waves, so hard to cross;
surmounter of ties (saṅga), abandoner of death, free of acquisitions (upadhi),
he has abandoned suffering (dukkha) for no renewal of existence;
gone to his end, he comes not within compare:
he has deluded the King of Death, I declare."
This matter, too, was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.

The Second Chapter (vagga).
Its summary (uddāna):
Merit, the Eye, and then the Faculties,
the Periods, twofold Conduct, the Pure,
the Sage, and then Lust twice again —
this second chapter they call supreme.
