[248] This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard:
"Bhikkhus, I have seen beings possessed of bodily misconduct (kāyaduccarita), possessed of verbal misconduct (vacīduccarita), possessed of mental misconduct (manoduccarita), revilers of the noble ones, holders of wrong view (micchādiṭṭhi), undertaking actions under the influence of wrong view, who, with the breakup of the body, after death, have been reborn in the plane of misery (apāya), the bad destination (duggati), the lower realm (vinipāta), in hell (niraya). But, bhikkhus, I do not say this having heard it from another ascetic or brahmin: 'I have seen beings possessed of bodily misconduct, possessed of verbal misconduct, possessed of mental misconduct, revilers of the noble ones, holders of wrong view, undertaking actions under the influence of wrong view, who, with the breakup of the body, after death, have been reborn in the plane of misery, the bad destination, the lower realm, in hell.' Rather, bhikkhus, it is just what I have myself known, myself seen, myself understood that I declare: 'I have seen beings possessed of bodily misconduct, possessed of verbal misconduct, possessed of mental misconduct, revilers of the noble ones, holders of wrong view, undertaking actions under the influence of wrong view, who, with the breakup of the body, after death, have been reborn in the plane of misery, the bad destination, the lower realm, in hell.'"
This is the meaning of what the Blessed One said. In this connection it is said:
Having directed the mind wrongly,
having spoken wrong speech,
having done wrong deeds with the body,
a person here—
of little learning, a doer of demerit
in this brief life here—
with the breakup of the body, that one, weak in wisdom,
is reborn in hell.
This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One; so I have heard.
