[399] "Might there be, by yet another method, … ?" … And how might there be? "Whatever suffering (dukkha) originates, all of it has clinging (upādāna) as its condition" — this is one contemplation. "But with the remainderless fading away and cessation of that very clinging, there is no origination of suffering" — this is the second contemplation. For one who rightly contemplates the dyad in this way … Then the Teacher said further:
"With clinging as condition there is existence (bhava);
one who has come to be undergoes suffering.
For one who is born there is death:
this is the origination of suffering.
Therefore, with the destruction of clinging,
the wise, having rightly understood,
having directly known the destruction of birth (jāti),
do not go on to renewed existence (punabbhava)."
