[313] 7. Whoever here among humans does violence to other living beings — that man falls away from both: from this world and from the world beyond. But he who, with a mind (citta) of loving-kindness (mettā), shows compassion for all living beings — a man of such a kind generates much merit indeed. One should train in well-spoken speech, in waiting upon ascetics, in sitting alone in a secluded place, and in the calming of the mind. The Elder Vāraṇa.
