Welcome indeed was it for me —
at Gayā, at the Phaggu festival of Gayā —
that I saw the Fully Enlightened One
teaching the supreme Dhamma:
Him of great radiance, teacher of the assembly,
attained to the foremost, the Guide,
the Victor (jina) over the world with its devas,
whose vision is incomparable;
The great nāga, the great hero,
of great splendour, free from taints (āsava),
with all taints utterly destroyed,
the Teacher who has no fear from any quarter.
Long defiled indeed was I,
bound fast by the tether of views;
yet that Blessed One released me, Senaka,
from all ties (gantha).
