Morning, at midday, and in the evening —
three times a day —
I went down into the water
at Gayā, at the Gayā-phaggu festival.
"Whatever evil (pāpa) was done by me
before, in other births,
that I now wash away here" —
such was the view (diṭṭhi) I formerly held.
Having heard a well-spoken utterance,
a word endowed with the Dhamma and its meaning,
I reflected wisely upon the meaning
as it truly and exactly is.
I have washed away all evil:
I am stainless, cleansed, clean,
pure — an heir of the Buddha,
a son of the Buddha, born of his breast.
Having plunged into the eightfold stream,
I washed away all evil;
I attained the three true knowledges (vijjā);
the Buddha's teaching (sāsana) has been done.
