9. "I shall hold you fast, mind (citta), as an elephant is held at the barred gate;
I shall not set you upon evil, you net of sensual desire (kāmajāla) sprung from the body.
Held fast, you shall not go, like an elephant that gains no opening in the gate;
nor, wretched mind, shall you go roaming again and again by force, delighting in evil.
As a strong wielder of the goad turns round an untamed, newly caught elephant against its will,
even so shall I turn you round.
As an excellent charioteer, skilled in the taming of fine horses, tames a thoroughbred,
even so shall I tame you, established as I am in the five powers.
With mindfulness (sati) I shall bind you; with self purified I shall tame you;
curbed by the yoke of energy (vīriya), you shall not go far from here, O mind."
