[567] Asked by him, Mātali the deva-charioteer explained;
knowing, he declared to one who knew not the result (vipāka) of evil deeds:
"Those who in the world of the living are doers of bad deeds,
who transgress against the wives of others—
such as they are thieves of the most precious of goods;
these people are cast down (head-downward) into hell.
For many multitudes of years, there
in the hells they experience painful feeling (dukkhaṃ vedanaṃ);
for there are no protectors for the doer of evil,
escorted as he is by his own deeds (kamma).
Those of cruel deeds, having engendered evil—
these people are cast down (head-downward) into hell."
