[568] "These torments (upakkama) high and low, many and various, most dreadful in form, are seen in the hells (niraya); fear indeed comes over me, O charioteer, at the sight. I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of the devas: what evil, pray, did these mortals do, these people who feel feelings (vedanā) beyond measure — painful (dukkha), piercing,¹ harsh, and bitter?" ¹ The Burmese edition (ม.) reads *tibbā* ["intense"]; from here onward the same applies.
