[578] Asked by him, Mātali the deva charioteer answered;
knowing the result of meritorious deeds, he declared it to one who knew not:
"Whatever mortals here in the world of the living, virtuous¹ lay followers (upāsaka),
furnished parks and wells, drinking-water stations and causeways,
and respectfully ministered to the Arahants grown cool;
who gave robes and almsfood, requisites and lodging
to those become upright, with a mind full of confidence;
who on the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and whichever is the eighth day of the fortnight,
and in the special fortnight (pāṭihāriyapakkha),
kept the Uposatha well endowed with its eight factors,
always restrained in virtues —
self-controlled and devoted to sharing, they rejoice in a celestial mansion (vimāna)."
