[580] Asked by him, Mātali, the charioteer of the devas, explained;
knowing the result of meritorious deeds, he who knew declared it to him who knew not:
"This one was a householder in Mithilā, a lord of giving (dānapati);
with parks and wells, drinking-water stations and causeways,
he respectfully furnished the arahants (arahanta) who had grown cool.
Robes, almsfood, requisites, and lodging
he gave to those become upright, with a serenely confident mind.
On the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight,
and on the special fortnight (pāṭihāriyapakkha),
he observed the uposatha well composed of its eight factors,
ever restrained in the precepts.
Restrained and given to sharing, he rejoices in a celestial mansion (vimāna)."
