[582] Questioned by him, Mātali the deva-charioteer answered;
knowing the result (vipāka) of meritorious deeds, he declared it to one who knew not:
"This one was a householder in Mithilā; he was a lord of giving (dānapati).
Parks and wells, drinking-places and causeways —
these he respectfully furnished for the arahants grown cool.
Robes and almsfood, requisites and lodgings
he gave to those of upright nature, with a mind full of confidence.
On the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth day of the fortnight,
and in the special fortnight (pāṭihāriyapakkha),
he kept the Uposatha well endowed with its eight factors,
ever restrained in the precepts.
Restraint and sharing were his: he rejoices in a heavenly mansion (vimāna)."
