[595] Asked by him, Mātali, the deva charioteer, explained;
knowing the result (vipāka) of meritorious deeds,
he declared it to him who knew it not:
"That which they call 'Sudhammā' — this is that assembly hall (sabhā) which is seen,
radiant with beryl (veḷuriya), variegated;
well-fashioned pillars uphold it —
octagonal, well-wrought pillars, all made of beryl —
wherein the devas of Tāvatiṃsa, all with Inda at their head,
sit together contemplating the welfare of devas and humans.
Enter by this way, O royal sage,
into the devas' place of rejoicing."
