[166] **He indeed, when people are divided, does not run with a faction**: When people are separated, split, fallen into two parties, become two factions — holding different views, having different acceptances, different preferences, different persuasions, relying on the support of different views — going the wrong course of partiality (chandāgati), going the wrong course of hatred (dosāgati), going the wrong course of delusion (mohāgati), going the wrong course of fear (bhayāgati), he does not go the wrong course of partiality, does not go the wrong course of hatred, does not go the wrong course of delusion, does not go the wrong course of fear; he does not go by the power of lust (rāga), does not go by the power of hatred, does not go by the power of delusion, does not go by the power of conceit (māna), does not go by the power of views (diṭṭhi), does not go by the power of restlessness (uddhacca), does not go by the power of doubt (vicikicchā), does not go by the power of latent tendencies (anusaya); he is not led, is not led away, is not carried off, is not swept along by factious dhammas. Therefore it is said: he indeed, when people are divided, does not run with a faction.
