[17] **Cattle, horses, slaves, and menfolk** (gavāssaṃ dāsaporisaṃ): "Cattle" (gava) — cows are so called. "Horses" (assā) — livestock (pasu) and the like are so called. "Slaves" (dāsā) — there are four kinds of slaves: a slave born within the household, a slave bought with wealth, one who enters slavery of his own accord, and one who enters slavery unwillingly.
Some indeed are slaves by birth;
some are slaves bought with wealth;
some enter slavery of their own accord;
some become slaves driven by fear.
"Menfolk" (porisa) — there are three kinds of men: servants, workers, and dependents. Hence, "cattle, horses, slaves, and menfolk."
