[171] **Having decided among dhammas, that which is grasped** (dhammesu niccheyya samuggahītaṃ): **Among dhammas** means: among the sixty-two speculative views (diṭṭhi). **Having decided** (niccheyya) means: having decided, adjudged, investigated, scrutinized, weighed, evaluated, clarified, and made evident. [**Grasped** (samuggahītaṃ) means:] grasping at a limit, grasping at a section, grasping at the best, grasping at a portion, grasping at an accumulation, grasping at a collection — anything grasped, adhered to, insisted upon, clung to, or resolved upon thus: "This is true, real, so, actual, exact, undistorted" — for him there is none; it does not exist, it is not found; it has been abandoned, cut off, stilled, subsided, rendered incapable of arising again, burnt up by the fire of knowledge (ñāṇa). Hence: **having decided among dhammas, that which is grasped**. Therefore the Blessed One said:
In whom there is here no aspiration toward either extreme,
toward existence in this or that state, here or beyond —
for him there are no entrenchments whatever
grasped after deciding among dhammas.
