[339] **Peaceful, not depending, one would not crave existence.** "Peaceful": he is peaceful because lust (rāga) is calmed; peaceful because hatred is calmed; peaceful because delusion is calmed; peaceful because anger (kodha), resentment (upanāha), denigration (makkha), domineering (paḷāsa), envy (issā), avarice (macchariya), deceit (māyā), hypocrisy (sāṭheyya), obstinacy (thambha), presumption (sārambha), conceit (māna), contempt (atimāna), vanity (mada), heedlessness (pamāda), all defilements, all misconduct, all disturbances, all fevers, all torments, and all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā) are calmed, stilled, pacified, burned out, extinguished, departed, and tranquilized — he is peaceful, calmed, quenched, tranquilized: thus "peaceful."
"Not depending": there are two dependencies — dependency through craving (taṇhā) and dependency through views (diṭṭhi) … This is dependency through craving … This is dependency through views. Having abandoned the dependency through craving and relinquished the dependency through views, not depending on the eye, not depending on the ear, not depending on the nose, not depending on the tongue, not depending on the body, not depending on the mind; not depending on forms, sounds, odors, tastes, tangibles; on family, group, dwelling, gain, fame, praise, happiness; on robes, almsfood, lodging, or medicinal requisites for the sick; on the sense-sphere element (kāmadhātu), the form element, or the formless element among the elements (dhātu); on sense-sphere existence, form-sphere existence, formless existence; on percipient existence, non-percipient existence, neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient existence; on one-constituent existence, four-constituent existence, five-constituent existence; on the past, the future, or the present; not depending on things seen, heard, sensed, or cognizable — not grasping, not clinging, not adhering: thus "peaceful, not depending."
"One would not crave existence": one would not crave sense-sphere existence, would not crave form-sphere existence, would not crave formless existence; would not crave, would not hanker, would not yearn: thus "peaceful, not depending, one would not crave existence." Therefore the Blessed One said:
"Not by view, not by learning, not by knowledge (ñāṇa), (Māgandiya," said the Blessed One,)
"nor even by virtue and vows does one speak of purity;
nor yet by absence of view, absence of learning, absence of knowledge,
absence of virtue, absence of vows — not by that either.
Having let go of these, not grasping at them,
peaceful, not depending, one would not crave existence."
