[504] "For one proceeding thus, form ceases to be (evaṃsametassa vibhoti rūpaṃ)": here a bhikkhu, with the abandoning of pleasure … enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna. When the mind (citta) is thus concentrated, purified, cleansed, unblemished, rid of defilements (upakkilesa), become malleable, wieldy, steady, and attained to imperturbability, he directs and inclines the mind toward the obtaining of the attainment (samāpatti) of the sphere of infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana) — he is one endowed with the path to the formless (arūpa). For one proceeding thus, practising thus, moving thus, conducting himself thus, guarding thus, maintaining thus, sustaining thus, form ceases to be, is made to cease, is passed beyond, is fully transcended, is gone beyond. Hence: "For one proceeding thus, form ceases to be."
