[628] **"Not longing for purity or impurity" (suddhiṃ asuddhinti apatthayāno):** They long for impurity — they long for unwholesome dhammas. They long for purity — they long for the five strands of sensual pleasure (pañca kāmaguṇā). They long for impurity — they long for unwholesome dhammas and the five strands of sensual pleasure. They long for purity — they long for the sixty-two views (dvāsaṭṭhi diṭṭhigatāni). They long for impurity — they long for unwholesome dhammas, the five strands of sensual pleasure, and the sixty-two views. They long for purity — they long for wholesome dhammas pertaining to the three realms (tedhātuka). They long for impurity — they long for unwholesome dhammas, the five strands of sensual pleasure, the sixty-two views, and wholesome dhammas pertaining to the three realms. They long for purity — the good worldlings (kalyāṇaputhujjanā) long for entry into the fixed course (niyāmāvakkanti); the trainees (sekhā) long for the supreme state, arahantship. On the attainment of arahantship, the arahant neither longs for unwholesome dhammas, nor longs for the five strands of sensual pleasure, nor longs for the sixty-two views, nor longs for wholesome dhammas pertaining to the three realms, nor longs for entry into the fixed course, nor longs for the supreme state, arahantship. The arahant has transcended longing, has passed beyond growth and decline. He has lived out the dwelling [in the holy life], has completed the conduct … for him there is no renewed existence. Hence, "not longing for purity or impurity."
