[631] **"Relying on that, or on what is loathed" (tamūpanissāya jigucchitaṃ vā):** there are some ascetics and brahmins (samaṇabrāhmaṇā) who profess the doctrine of scrupulous austerity (tapojigucchā), who hold scrupulous austerity as the essence, who are dependent on scrupulous austerity, fully reliant upon it, attached to it, gone over to it, cleaving to it, and resolved upon it — hence, "relying on that, or on what is loathed."
