[688] *Peaceful, among the unpeaceful, he is equanimous* (santo asantesu upekkhako so): **"Peaceful" (santo):** he is peaceful because lust (rāga) is pacified, peaceful because hatred (dosa) is pacified, peaceful because delusion (moha) is pacified … because all unwholesome volitional formations (akusalābhisaṅkhārā) are pacified, stilled, allayed, extinguished, quenched, vanished, and tranquilized, he is peaceful, at peace, appeased, quenched, tranquilized — thus "peaceful."
**"Among the unpeaceful" (asantesu):** among those who are unpeaceful, not at peace, not appeased, not quenched, not tranquilized — thus "peaceful among the unpeaceful."
**"He is equanimous" (upekkhako so):** the Arahant is endowed with the six-factored equanimity: having seen a form with the eye, he is neither elated nor dejected; he dwells equanimous, with mindfulness and clear comprehension. Having heard a sound with the ear … developed, well tamed, he awaits his time — thus "peaceful, among the unpeaceful, he is equanimous."
