[785] **Having seen the dhamma witnessed for oneself, not by hearsay (sakkhidhammaṃ anītihamadassī):** As to "the dhamma witnessed for oneself (sakkhidhamma)": not by oral tradition ("thus it was, thus it was," itihitiha), not by hearsay ("so it is said," itikirā), not by lineage of teaching (paramparā), not by scriptural collections (piṭakasampadā), not by logic (takkahetu), not by inference (nayahetu), not by reasoned reflection (ākāraparivitakka), not by acceptance of a view after consideration (diṭṭhinijjhānakkhanti) — he saw, beheld, discerned, and penetrated the dhamma known by himself, directly known through his own higher knowledge, evident to his own experience (attapaccakkha). Therefore it is said: "having seen the dhamma witnessed for oneself, not by hearsay."
