[839] **"Basis and mental construing" (ārammaṇaṃ pakappanaṃ):** Craving (taṇhā) is called "basis" (ārammaṇa)¹ — that is, whatever lust (rāga), infatuation (sārāga), … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root (akusalamūlaṃ). Craving is also called "mental construing" (pakappanā) — that is, whatever lust, infatuation, … covetousness, greed, the unwholesome root. Hence, "basis and mental construing." ¹ [Siam edition variant note 3: the Burmese edition reads *ārammaṇam pi* ("craving is *also* called basis"), giving fully parallel glosses; the Siam text prints *ārammaṇā*.]
