[843] **"The brāhmaṇa stands on dry land" (thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo):** "dry land" (thala) is a designation for the deathless, Nibbāna — that is, the stilling of all formations (saṅkhāra), the relinquishment of all acquisitions (upadhi), the destruction of craving (taṇhā), dispassion (virāga), cessation (nirodha), Nibbāna.
**"Brāhmaṇa":** one is a brāhmaṇa because of having banished seven dhammas … unattached, such a one (tādī) — he is called a brahmā.
**"The brāhmaṇa stands on dry land":** the brāhmaṇa stands on dry land; he stands on the island, stands in the shelter, stands in the cave of safety, stands in the refuge, stands in the fearless, stands in the imperishable, stands in the deathless, stands in Nibbāna — therefore, "the brāhmaṇa stands on dry land."
