[939] **"He should endure cold and heat."** **Cold (sītaṃ):** cold occurs from two causes: cold occurs through the disturbance of the internal elements (dhātu), or cold occurs through the external season. **Heat (uṇhaṃ):** heat occurs from two causes: heat occurs through the disturbance of the internal elements, or heat occurs through the external season. **"He should endure cold and heat"** means: he should be patient with cold, with heat, with hunger, with thirst, with contact with gadflies, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and creeping creatures, and with ways of speech that are ill-spoken and unwelcome; he should be one whose nature is to endure arisen bodily feelings (vedanā) that are painful, racking, sharp, piercing, disagreeable, displeasing, and menacing to life. Therefore, "he should endure cold and heat."
