[940] **"Touched by them in many ways, he should be without abode (anoka)."** "He, by them": he would be touched, afflicted, beset, and possessed by the contact (phassa) of illness, by hunger, by cold, and by heat — thus, "he, touched by them." **"In many ways"**: he would be touched, afflicted, beset, and possessed in manifold modes — thus, "he, touched by them in many ways." **"Without abode (anoko)"**: he makes no opportunity for consciousness accompanied by volitional formation (abhisaṅkhāra) — thus too he is "without abode." Or alternatively: he makes no opportunity for misconduct by body, misconduct by speech, or misconduct by mind — thus too he is "without abode." Hence, "touched by them in many ways, he should be without abode."
