[941] **"He should make firm the endeavor of energy (vīriyaparakkama)"** — 'endeavor of energy' means whatever mental (cetasika) arousing of energy (vīriyārambha) there is: striving (nikkama), endeavor (parakkama), exertion (uyyāma), effort (vāyāma), zeal (ussāha), perseverance (ussoḷhī), not turning back (appaṭivānī), vigor (thāma), steadfastness (dhiti), unrelaxed endeavor, not casting off desire, not shirking the task, firmly taking up the task; energy (vīriya), the faculty of energy (vīriyindriya), the power of energy (vīriyabala), right effort (sammāvāyāma). "He should make firm the endeavor of energy": he should be one whose undertaking is firm, whose undertaking is steadfast — thus, "he should make firm the endeavor of energy." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Touched by the contact of affliction and by hunger,
he should endure cold and heat;
touched by these in many ways, that houseless one (anoka)
should make firm the endeavor of energy.
