[157] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time two bhikkhunīs, oppressed by discontent (anabhirati), entered an inner chamber and engaged in slapping with the palm (talaghātaka). The bhikkhunīs, running up at that sound, said to those bhikkhunīs: "Venerable ladies, why are you misconducting yourselves with a man?"
"Venerable ladies, we are not misconducting ourselves with a man." They informed the bhikkhunīs of this matter.
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can bhikkhunīs engage in slapping with the palm?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, that bhikkhunīs engage in slapping with the palm?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed, bhikkhus, can bhikkhunīs engage in slapping with the palm? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
'In slapping with the palm, there is a Pācittiya.'"
