[246] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Thullanandā gave an ascetic's robe (samaṇacīvara) to dancers, to actors, to acrobats, to jesters, and to drummers, saying: "Speak my praise in the assembly."
The dancers, the actors, the acrobats, the jesters, and the drummers spoke the praise of the bhikkhunī Thullanandā in the assembly: "The lady Thullanandā is learned, a fluent speaker, confident, capable of giving a talk on the Dhamma. Give to the lady! Do (service) for the lady!"
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … were annoyed, criticized, and complained: "How can the lady Thullanandā give an ascetic's robe to a householder?" …
"Is it true, as is said, bhikkhus, that the bhikkhunī Thullanandā gives an ascetic's robe to a householder?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her: "Bhikkhus, how can the bhikkhunī Thullanandā give an ascetic's robe to a householder? Bhikkhus, this is not for the confidence of those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhunī give an ascetic's robe to a householder, or to a male wanderer (paribbājaka), or to a female wanderer (paribbājikā), it entails pācittiya."
