[311] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Thullanandā gave hard food and soft food with her own hand to actors, to dancers, to acrobats, to jesters, and to drummers, saying, "Speak my praise in the assembly." And the actors, the dancers, the acrobats, the jesters, and the drummers spoke the praise of the bhikkhunī Thullanandā in the assembly: "The lady Thullanandā is learned, an able speaker, confident, capable of giving a talk on the Dhamma. Give to the lady! Do for the lady!"
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, deplored, and complained: "How can the lady Thullanandā give hard food and soft food with her own hand to a householder?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as it is said, that the bhikkhunī Thullanandā gives hard food and soft food with her own hand to a householder?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her: "Bhikkhus, how can the bhikkhunī Thullanandā give hard food and soft food with her own hand to a householder? Bhikkhus, this does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhunī should give hard food or soft food with her own hand to a householder, or to a male wanderer, or to a female wanderer, incurs a pācittiya."
