[134] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Thullanandā was learned, a fluent speaker, confident, and capable of giving a talk on the Dhamma. Many people attended upon the bhikkhunī Thullanandā. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Thullanandā's cell (pariveṇa) was falling into disrepair. People said to the bhikkhunī Thullanandā: "Lady, why is this cell of yours falling into disrepair?" "Friends, there are no donors; there are no workers." Then those people, having collected a voluntary contribution for the sake of the bhikkhunī Thullanandā's cell, gave the bhikkhunī Thullanandā a requisite-fund. But the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, with that requisite-fund—and having also begged on her own—had medicine procured in exchange and used it. The people, finding out, complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can Lady Thullanandā have something else procured in exchange with a requisite-fund intended for one thing, designated for one thing, belonging to an individual, and obtained by her own asking?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as they say, that the bhikkhunī Thullanandā has something else procured in exchange with a requisite-fund intended for one thing, designated for one thing, belonging to an individual, and obtained by her own asking?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her: "Bhikkhus, how can the bhikkhunī Thullanandā have something else procured in exchange with a requisite-fund intended for one thing, designated for one thing, belonging to an individual, and obtained by her own asking? Bhikkhus, this does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhunī have something else procured in exchange with a requisite-fund intended for one thing, designated for one thing, belonging to an individual, and obtained by her own asking, it entails relinquishment with confession (nissaggiya pācittiya)."
