Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhunī Vibhaṅga · Vol. 3 · Section 18

[18] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Thullanandā was following the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, formerly a vulture trapper (gaddhabādhipubba), who had been suspended by a unanimous Saṅgha. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and complained: "How indeed can the lady Thullanandā follow the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, formerly a vulture trapper, who has been suspended by a unanimous Saṅgha?" … "Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that the bhikkhunī Thullanandā is following Ariṭṭha, formerly a vulture trapper, who has been suspended by a unanimous Saṅgha?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her: "How indeed, bhikkhus, can the bhikkhunī Thullanandā follow Ariṭṭha, formerly a vulture trapper, who has been suspended by a unanimous Saṅgha? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence …" "And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule: Should any bhikkhunī follow a bhikkhu who has been suspended by a unanimous Saṅgha in accordance with the Dhamma, the Vinaya, and the Teacher's instruction — one who is disrespectful, who has not made amends, who has not restored companionship — that bhikkhunī should be spoken to thus by the bhikkhunīs: 'Lady, this bhikkhu has been suspended by a unanimous Saṅgha in accordance with the Dhamma, the Vinaya, and the Teacher's instruction; he is disrespectful, he has not made amends, he has not restored companionship. Do not, lady, follow this bhikkhu.' And should that bhikkhunī, being spoken to thus by the bhikkhunīs, persist just as before, that bhikkhunī should be admonished by the bhikkhunīs up to three times for the relinquishing of that course. If, being admonished up to three times, she relinquishes it, that is good. If she does not relinquish it, this bhikkhunī too is pārājika, not in communion — a 'follower of one suspended' (ukkhittānuvattikā)."
