[276] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhunī Caṇḍakālī was living in company (saṃsaṭṭhā) with a householder and also with a householder's son. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the lady Caṇḍakālī live in company with a householder and also with a householder's son?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that the bhikkhunī Caṇḍakālī lives in company with a householder and also with a householder's son?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her: "How indeed, bhikkhus, can the bhikkhunī Caṇḍakālī live in company with a householder and also with a householder's son? This, bhikkhus, is not for the arousing of confidence in those without confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhunī live in company with a householder or with a householder's son, that bhikkhunī should be spoken to by the bhikkhunīs thus: 'Do not, lady, live in company with a householder or with a householder's son. Withdraw, lady; the Saṅgha praises only seclusion for the sister.' And should that bhikkhunī, being spoken to thus by the bhikkhunīs, persist just as before, that bhikkhunī should be formally admonished by the bhikkhunīs up to the third time for the relinquishing of that [conduct]. If, being formally admonished up to the third time, she relinquishes it, that is good; if she does not relinquish it, there is an offense of pācittiya."
