[194] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhunī (bhikkhunī) Thullanandā would stand together with a man, one with one, on a street, in a blind alley, and at a crossroads; she would converse with him, whisper in his ear, and dismiss the bhikkhunī who was her companion.
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … They criticized, denounced, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the lady Thullanandā stand together with a man, one with one, on a street, in a blind alley, or at a crossroads, converse with him, whisper in his ear, and dismiss the bhikkhunī who is her companion?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the bhikkhunī Thullanandā stands together with a man, one with one, on a street, in a blind alley, and at a crossroads, converses with him, whispers in his ear, and dismisses the bhikkhunī who is her companion?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed, bhikkhus, can the bhikkhunī Thullanandā stand together with a man, one with one, on a street, in a blind alley, or at a crossroads, converse with him, whisper in his ear, and dismiss the bhikkhunī who is her companion? This, bhikkhus, does not conduce to the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhunī should stand together with a man, one with one, on a street, or in a blind alley, or at a crossroads, or should converse with him, or whisper in his ear, or should dismiss the bhikkhunī who is her companion, there is an offense of pācittiya."
