[398] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, the park of Anāthapiṇḍika. Now on that occasion the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, having ordained a co-resident pupil (sahajīvinī), neither moved away with her nor had her moved away. Her husband (sāmika) seized her.
Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … they complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How indeed can the lady Thullanandā, having ordained a co-resident pupil, neither move away with her nor have her moved away? Her husband has seized her. If this bhikkhunī had departed, her husband could not have seized her." …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, having ordained a co-resident pupil, neither moved away with her nor had her moved away, and her husband seized her?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked her: "How indeed, bhikkhus, could the bhikkhunī Thullanandā, having ordained a co-resident pupil, neither move away with her nor have her moved away, so that her husband seized her? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhunī, having ordained a co-resident pupil, neither move away with her nor have her moved away, even for a distance of five or six yojanas, it is an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya)."
