[457] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the bhikkhunīs of the group of six (chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo) wore women's ornaments. People criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhunīs wear women's ornaments, just like householder women who enjoy sensual pleasures?"
The bhikkhunīs heard those people criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six wear women's ornaments?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the bhikkhunīs of the group of six wear women's ornaments?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six wear women's ornaments?¹ This, bhikkhus, is not for the arousing of confidence in those who are without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Should any bhikkhunī wear a woman's ornament, there is an offense of pācittiya."
