[460] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhunīs (bhikkhunī) of the group of six (chabbaggiyā) bathed with scented cosmetics (gandhavaṇṇaka). People criticized them, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can bhikkhunīs bathe with scented cosmetics, just like women householders who enjoy sensual pleasures?"
The bhikkhunīs heard those people criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhunīs who were of few wishes … they criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six bathe with scented cosmetics?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the bhikkhunīs of the group of six bathe with scented cosmetics?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Bhikkhus, how can the bhikkhunīs of the group of six bathe with scented cosmetics? This, bhikkhus, is not for the confidence of those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, let the bhikkhunīs recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'Should any bhikkhunī bathe with scented cosmetics, it is an offense of pācittiya.'"
