[127] **"Hoping, Puṇṇaka, for this state of existence (itthattaṃ)."** *Hoping*: hoping for the acquisition of forms, hoping for the acquisition of sounds, hoping for the acquisition of odours, hoping for the acquisition of tastes, hoping for the acquisition of tangibles, hoping for the acquisition of sons, hoping for the acquisition of wives, hoping for the acquisition of wealth, hoping for the acquisition of fame, hoping for the acquisition of sovereignty; hoping for the acquisition of individual existence (attabhāva) in a family of affluent khattiyas, hoping for the acquisition of individual existence in a family of affluent brahmins, hoping for the acquisition of individual existence in a family of affluent householders; hoping for the acquisition of individual existence among the devas of the realm of the Four Great Kings (Cātummahārājikā); hoping for the acquisition of individual existence among the Tāvatiṃsa devas, among the Yāma devas, among the Tusita devas, among the Nimmānaratī devas, among the Paranimmitavasavattī devas, among the devas of Brahmā's retinue — hoping, wishing, welcoming, aspiring, longing, hankering: thus, *hoping*.
